A Faltering MCU Could be Shrinking in a Nintendoverse Shadow

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a cultural phenomenon since its inception in 2008 with the release of “Iron Man.” The interconnected universe of superheroes has captivated audiences worldwide and has become the highest-grossing film franchise in history. However, in recent years, the MCU fan base has been shrinking, and poor management by Disney may be to blame.

One factor that has led to the decline in the MCU fan base is the over-saturation of the franchise. In recent years, Disney has released multiple MCU films annually, leaving little time for audiences to anticipate and get excited about upcoming releases. Such issues have led to fatigue among fans, who have grown tired of the same formulaic films and predictable storylines.

Another area of cinematic decay is the departure of crucial actors and characters from the franchise. For example, with the end of the Infinity Saga, several beloved characters such as Iron Man and Captain America have been written out of the series. Such departures leave fans feeling disheartened and unsure about the future of the MCU.

Furthermore, mechanisms outside of producer and director control, like the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupted the release schedule of several MCU projects, leading to delays and uncertainty among fans and resulting in a lack of momentum for the franchise, with many fans losing interest in the upcoming releases.

Poor management by Disney has also directly played a role in the decline of MCU fans. After the firing of James Gunn from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” for controversial tweets, a backlash rippled among fans; some argued that Gunn was being unfairly punished. This decision also resulted in delays in the film’s production, further disappointing fans. In addition, projects driven by “wokeness” seeking to cast the widest audience net possible have also harmed the company’s reputation.

Disney’s decision to release “Black Widow” simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ also caused controversy, with many fans feeling that the company prioritizes profit over the theatrical experience. This move may have also contributed to the underwhelming box office performance of the film.

But there is hope on the horizon; Nintendo’s new Super Mario Bros has soared to heights similar to Marvel’s early theatrical success. As of today, it has grossed over $900 million globally and is well on its way to grossing $1 billion. In addition, Mario Bros is technically the most successful animated movie release of all time, even beating out Disney’s Frozen II. With well established video game characters like Donkey Kong, Mario and Bowser nostalgia has proven to be a powerful driver among fans.

It’s undeniable, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced a decline in its fan base in recent years, with poor management by Disney being a significant contributing factor. Over-saturation, character departures, the COVID-19 pandemic, and controversial decisions have all played a role in the decline of the MCU. It remains to be seen if Disney can turn things around and reignite the excitement and passion of the MCU fan base with competition from companies like Nintendo, creating a vice in the market.

Netflix’s Sea Beast is a Tier One Animated Sea Tale

Netflix has been on a downward trend since just about everything else in the economy started. On June 23rd, Netflix announced a layoff of 300 employees as part of a total 70 million dollar severance expense. The cuts came shortly after the previous quarter’s loss of nearly 1 million subscribers. But who is honestly surprised with viewers having more original content options as streaming competitors ramp up. Original shows and movies set streaming brands apart. The Sea Beast is an original and witty take on sea life and our relationship with it. Audiences have firmly nestled it in Netflix’s top ten virtually since its release on July 1st and has a shocking 94% Rotten Tomato score.

“Live a great life, and die a great death” is part of the hunter’s code, a code that all sailors brave enough to battle the monstrous beast of the deep sail. For hundreds of years, people trapped in tradition by a Monarch have unquestionably hunted enormous creatures in a never-ending war. The truth is more complicated, and The Sea Beast tale is no different. Should we follow and pass down tradition regardless of our experiences? Avoiding using a children’s movie as a political platform is the best decision creators can make. People hear enough of that in the news and media.

The voice acting is jam-packed with talent: Karl Urban (Jacob Holland), (Maisie Brumble), Zares-Angel Hator, and Jared Harris (Captain Crow), to name a few. The Sea Beast director Chris Williams has again created an animated ocean world that may be more inviting than the real thing. Prev projects Big Hero 6 and Moana have undoubtedly prepared the director for his most fantastic animated film yet. While the visuals are stunning, the story set’s it apart from flops like Buzz Light Year that try too hard to hit every check box in the audience.

Palpable for the whole family, there will be moments you question whether this story tries to answer the question about human and animal hunting issues. I assure you it’s not. Even with a distinct animation style, The Sea Beast feels like a well-done Pixar film that joyless executives haven’t audited for maximum profit raking. With rival animation projects like The Rise of Gru earning $500 million at the box office, this will not be the last A-list animation endeavor we see from Netflix.

Even if you quickly grow tired of The Sea Beast’s jaunty sea shanty music, your children are sure to make it one of their new endless re-watchable favorites. Have you had the chance to watch or watched it so much you’re sick of it already? Let us know in the comments if you gave it a chance and what you thought.

Blade Fans Could See a Rated (R) Movie

In 2019 Disney and Marvel teased fans, confirming that Mahershala Ali would be reprising the role of Blade in an upcoming movie. Supporters of the original Blade trilogy held their breaths for a Wesley Snipes return, but since the Comicon news, any information has been scarce at best.

Comic Blade

Piggybacking off of a more established Marvel project, Deadpool 3 was recently reconfirmed as a rated (R) picture, coupled with a creator’s promise that it would not be “Disneyfied.” For once it seems the upper brass is letting writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick do their thing. Shortly after this confirmation by Variety: Productionlist.com updated their site, listing a Blade shoot date/location for July 4th in Atlanta and New Orleans. Putting all your hopes in one basket is never a good idea, but with the coincidental timing for updates on Blade and Deadpool 3, fans have to ask will Blade be Rated (R)?

Blade Hospital Scene

The answer is it’s possible. Marvel’s original Blade was rated R and garnered significant success financially. Since other popular Marvel film adaptions like Logan and Deadpool have followed a similar design, satisfying an audience niche that appreciates dismemberment.

Mahershala Ali as Blade

Given the comic lore for Blade, writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour may find it challenging to keep the material under the rated (R) guidelines. But to be honest, would that be such a bad thing? Let us know if you’re a pro horror blood and guts blade or looking for something tamer that the kiddos can watch. Leave your comments, love, and hate below.

The Mandalorian: More than Just a Bounty Hunter

Disney +’s long anticipated series original The Mandalorian is finally shifting fan focus from the Jedi and Sith cyclical cycle to an arguably cooler profession, bounty hunting. Throughout the years Star Wars films, games, shows and books have given glimpses of some of the galaxies most impressive bounty hunters. Non as recognizable as the infamous Boba Fett dressed in his menacing custom Mandalorian armor. Boba Fett is without a doubt one of the best things to come from Star Wars culture but as a clone from Jango Fett he was raised as such and has little ties to the Mandalorian traditions. The Mandalorian will feature a separate bounty hunter from the Fett’s, taking place during the galactic chaos that ensued following the fall of the Empire. A very different galaxy is on the horizon, Mandalorians have always been a big part of Star Wars lore but there is so much more to them than just jet packs and cool outfits.

Side shot of Mando’s outfit

Before becoming one of Star Wars most iconic races, Mandalorians were among the most fear and skilled soldiers in the galaxy. In a time far far away Mandalorian might opposed the Jedi Order of the Old Republic, even challenging Darth Revan one of the most powerful Jedi to live. During Mandalorian history a group known as the crusaders devoted themselves to battle and conquest over a millennia before the Separtist war. Desire for battle soon turned into a period of conquest and advancement for the Mandalorians, branching out from their home world of Mandalore to many other planets. Mandalorian desire for war could not be satisfied and it was a matter of time before the looming challenge of the formidable Jedi knights would be answered. Mandalorians engaged the republic across the outer rim in hopes the Jedi would respond with war. Eventually they would, warriors quickly adjusted to fight this new enemy that wielded the awesome power of the force. Great technological advancements of the time and improvements to a new altered fluid combat style soon closed the gap between a Mandalorian warrior and a force using opponent. Mandalorians rightfully developed their reputation even further as warriors capable of fighting and even defeating Jedi Knights in battle. The Mandalorian Jedi war almost destroyed the Mandalorian race but couldn’t quell the fighting spirit of the Mandalorians. They would continue a similar march of war for the majority of their following years. The homeworld of Mandalore was ravaged by constant battles from warring clans and was slow to recover following the Jedi war. It wasn’t until the Mandalorian civil war preceding the invasion of Naboo that a group of reformed Mandalorian pacifist  would rise up to oppose the constant militaristic values imposed in their society. Until this point much like Spartan society a Mandalorians worth was measured by his accomplishments in combat.

After the civil war, many mandalorians that would not choose sides or were among the losing side (militarist) found themselves a drift among the stars. Lifetimes of warfare and in fighting had created a clear schism between the two groups. With a new pacifist regime in power many Mandalorians set in the old warrior ways were left to fill out dangerous mercenary jobs and hunting down anyone with a big enough bounty. Mandalorians who wouldn’t conform to the new Mandalorian pacifist ways now had to make a new place in the galaxy for themselves. Notable numbers of Mandalorians had been left to scratching out a living as hired guns, thugs and mercenaries there were  even those who sold their sword in service of the Empire. A warrior society from the beginning with a few hold outs for progressive change makes it is clear any Mandalorian doing bounty hunter work is not to be taken lightly.

The Firespray-31-Class patrol ship used infamously by Mandalorians Jango and Boba Fett

Mandalorian equipment and gear is certainly nothing to scoff at, Our mystery character in The Mandalorian will have more than skill to rely on retrieving a bounty. Descendant from generations of combat prowess that came before, you won’t find this gear on a stormtrooper. After hundreds of years many Mandalorians prefer to wear the traditional armour and T shaped helmet visor from the time of Mandalore himself. Usually made of Beskar alloy the armor a Mandalorian wears is certainly capable of protecting its wearer from typical blaster fire and stabbing weapons. As a set this armor would consist of a helmet, pauldrons, vambraces, a breastplate, codpiece, knee pads and leg guards. From the helmet wearers are equipped with a macrobinocular viewplate, several tactical displays a comm link and rage finder.
Sporting more than a simple wrist rocket a Mandalorians vambraces could contain any number of weaponry; repulsors, paralyzing darts, grappling line, flamethrowers, lasers, rockets and a portable shield. As an added measurement for battle mobility and countering armored vehicles Mandalorians also utilize a number of jetpack models that are typically tipped with anti vehicle or explosive ordnance. Don’t expect a Mandolorian bounty hunter to be traveling by jetpack or a run down tie fighter, in the past have utilized a number of starships; Firespray-31 class patrol ship (Boba Fett ship), M22-T Krayt Gunship, Crusader class corvette, StarViper Assault fighter, Verda Kot and the immensely powerful Keldabe class Battleship.

Words of a Mandalorian are never something to be taken lightly, Jawajoey has a great video on their YouTube channel of Mandalorian Canderous Ordo describing to Jedi Revan his initiation as a Mandalorian warrior. The following clip was shot on one of the single greatest accomplishments in the Star Wars gaming universe, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.

“I remember it well, orbiting high above a placid world, its defenses just stirring. As was tradition, I would go ahead of the first wave to find enemies in the thickest fighting. I remember sitting there in my armor, linked directly with the Basilisk thrumming beneath me. My heart racing with fear at the coming battle. The doors opened in front of me and the air was sucked out of the drop bay, scattering crystals of frozen vapor across my path. I can’t describe what it feels like to look directly down at a world, falling continuously as you circle it, with barely fifteen centimeters of armor plating protecting you. When the magnetic locks disengaged on my droid I plunged out of the drop bay towards the battle that waited below. The exhilaration, the euphoria, I felt as I streaked into the atmosphere, dodging self-guided projectile and beam weapons, was unmatched. An 80 Kilometer plunge through the atmosphere, dodging and weaving, the outside of my armor glowing like the sun with the heat of reentry. And with barely thirty meters to spare, I twisted and skimmed the surface, firing at the giant beam generators that were in my path. The explosion form that sent shockwaves that leveled the entire complex. It was the moment of my entire life. I’ll never forget those times. But… things are different now. We can’t go on fighting the way we had. There are too few of us left now. But I don’t really want to talk about this anymore. I trust I’ve satisfied your curiosity for now?”. – Canderous Ordo

Canderous Ordo as the Mandalorian leader Mandalore

If you are fortunate enough to own an Xbox One you can even opt in to changing your geo location to the Netherlands and start streaming now! As anticipation builds for the new streaming service, Disney has all the groundwork needed from Star Wars content efforts to create an amazing original base on a Mandalorian setting. Rick and Morty’s Expo Breakdown From the SDCC: Upcoming Characters, Content and More

It has been over 650 days since we last saw Morty attempt a presidential selfie. For fans of the hit show Rick and Morty it might as well be years, wait that is years! In San Diego the 2019 Comic Con gave eager attendants the chance to sit in on an expo panel with the shows voice actors and writers. Reflecting the diverse audience that has learned to love the show, fans of all dimensions and varying cybernetic enhancements began to poke and prod the team for new and returning characters, content creation processes and of course possible teasers.

Those of us who didn’t have the opportunity to see this awesome nerd gathering in person, don’t feel left out here is a great video from Youtuber Jon Roark Foley.

Best part of the show is the number of brief appearances from memorable characters appearing then dissolving into writers oblivion. One of the most iconic characters seen is Mr Meseeks, appearing in episode Meeseeks and Destroy Season 1. Dan Harmon was probed (mentally) by a mega Messeeks fan if the team ever considers bringing back any of those one episode characters that are seared into our memory. Dan replied I think we can throw in some Messeeks somewhere along the line. You have it from the writers slightly unhinged jaw, upcoming seasons may have a Meeseeks appearance. Will he be out for revenge against Jerry’s short game, maybe stuck in the real world due to a Meeseeks box malfunction, who knows. Not confirmed by any means but the possibility of a brief appearance by Mr. Meeseeks can make anyone want to shout “I’m Mr. Meeseeks look at me”. Not only will season 4 feature some fan favorites, new characters played by familiar faces are on the way. Director of Thor Ragnarok Taika Waititi will be playing a pink squishy faced alien by the name of Glootie. From what you can see in the clip from the season 4 teaser it looks like Glootie is an intern working with Jerry and Morty to release an app. The initial teaser leads us to believe it’s not exactly a constructive work environment. Some other names making a guest star voice appearance will be Paul Giamatti, Sam Neill and Kathleen Turner.

Rick and Morty’s plot line is essentially an infinite idea bucket, the show’s multiverse contains infinite variations of the primary C-137 dimension. Each universe having a distinct variation of the Smith family means mutant mortys, savage summers and a doofus Rick. Infinite timelines opens the door to change our main characters into anyone or anything without too much of a fuss. Justin Roiland spoke to an inquisitive fan he identified as “Spiderman” (sadly Aunt May was nowhere to be found) about some of those infinite possibilities. Spiderman’s question was directed towards Rick and Summer’s characters, proposing are there any universes out there that could potentially contain a Summer and Rick partnership. This question was a powder keg because not only did it identify a great idea for upcoming episodes but also gave fans a chance to scratch their heads about what’s coming. We have seen adventures with Morty, Beth and of all family members Jerry. Episode Rickmancing the Stone in season 3 features a three team adventure with Rick, Morty and Summer however it would be nice to see a Summer and Rick duo in one of the dimensions. Summer is a little closer to Rick’s level of entropy vs Morty, experiencing a constant battle with puberty, emotional maturity and that fluctuating moral compass.

Moving down the list of great ideas, let’s flash back to the wise foreshadowing Mr. Poopybutthole. Who set the expectation at the season 3 finale when he warned us, Rick and Morty season 4 will be back in a really long time. In this credits scene Mr. Poopybutthole had even started a family. Mr Poopybutthole didn’t get near the love I expected from cos players at this years SDCC (Vindicators stole the show), a button bedazzled audience member had the writers and voice actors in a frenzy when suggesting incorporating Mr Poopybuthole’s family into the show and even giving some great name ideas. They landed along the lines of Mrs. Urethra, Mr. Erectile Pennis and a few variations in between. Justin Roiland put the midas touch on the name suggestions and came up with Mrs. Urethra Franklin, it’s still unclear if Justin was always under the impression Arethra Franklin was not actually pronounced Urethra.

Nothing is better than seeing Dan Harmon with a possible glass of Vodka, letting a few upcoming spoilers slip. Aside from characters and guest appearances the idea of time travel was being discussed during the expo. Responding to the audience in an uncurled slip of the tongue, Dan made mention of time travel happening in an episode later on down the road. It is unclear if this is in reference to a true spoiler in the upcoming season 4 but Dan’s chuckled response to the audience “a few spoilers for my kitties” gives weight to that possibility. Rob Schrob moderator at the event kicked into full gear to drown Dan out following the spoiler and time travel reference. Dan is a writer that obviously loves to see a reaction from the audience, so take it with a big grain of salt. Looking at facts we still have yet to see any type of origin story between Rick and what could be his original Morty (Evil Morty), time travel would be a quick way to explain Rick’s history with science vs a lame flash back. Not necessarily a spoiler, more of an idea of the long term goals for Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Rick and Morty could at some point make it’s way to the big screen. Justin’s commentary on the subject was that a movie would obviously be a long term goal. A Rick and Morty movie with Rick Sanchez belching and slurring his words on the big screen incites goosebumps. Southpark was the last great animated show to pull the trigger and step into Hollywood and have big success.

Rick and Morty isn’t just funny, it carries with it a suspense that keeps you coming back to find out what will Rick subject his family to next? As the story unfolds maybe our biggest questions are being left until fans riot at Miramax gates demanding a Rick and Morty (animated) movie.
